W.B. Yeats’s poems idealise the past, bemoan the present, and reject the future. They are
conservative in outlook, lacking any revolutionary or emotional force.
With reference to two of the unit’s keywords, and with detailed reference to two of the
poems, make an argument for or against this description of Yeats’ poetry. Your answer
should comment specifically on formal features of each poem, e.g. figurative language,
structure, rhythm, meter, and diction in so far as they are relevant to your argument.
Amongst other things, you might consider:
§ Apocalypse/redemption;
§ Youth/old age;
§ Life/death;
§ Human/nonhuman;
§ Religious and/or mythological imagery;
§ Social upheaval or civil unrest.
I will add in the unit keywords after so no need to do that.
