The goal of this option is to have you think about how gender is socially constructed in society, that is, how we create what constitutes what is seen as “male” or “female” (and how it is often just these two options!).
First, watch this short news clip about a 6 year old’s efforts to get female army toy figures.

1. At one point in this story the toymaker suggests that there isn’t a demand for female army figures. Why do you think this might be so? How are we socialized to like/want certain gendered toys? What consequences does this have? That is, how might playing with gendered toys give us certain messages about gender growing up?
2. What are other ways we “do gender”? That is, how do we create particular accepted ideas about what is masculine and what is feminine? A good way to think about this is to contemplate what happens when we break a common gender norm.
3. While this story talks about empowering girls, in many ways it also confirms a gender binary (Links to an external site.). How does it do this? How might we break traditional gender stereotypes and see gender in more fluid and non-binary ways?
