Subject: You may choose to analyze the story in a number of different ways. You could discuss one element of fiction, such as character, point of view, narration, theme, or symbolism, etc. or you can combine elements, such as character and theme. You will need an introductory paragraph with your thesis, several paragraphs of discussion/analysis, and a conclusion in which you remind readers of the important points and indicate possibilities for further investigation by readers. NOTE: I would suggest that you read the examples of fiction analysis from the introductory chapter, “Fiction: Reading, Responding, Writing,” to get a sense of this kind of analysis. If you need additional examples, please let me know.
General ideas to consider: These are basic ideas for you to consider as you get started. Use the questions in the readings for each fictional element as well to dig a bit deeper and go beyond the basics. You can use one of the critical lenses, such as Feminism, to add more depth to your interpretation.
1. Discuss the significance of the setting of the story. How do the characters interact with the setting? How does the setting influence their actions? How does the setting influence your understanding of the story’s theme?
2. Discuss the relationship between the characters and how those relationships are crucial to the development of conflict which, in turn, creates an interesting plot.
3. What do you think would be a theme of this story? What leads you to that conclusion? Which of the elements of fiction play the biggest role in your understanding of the theme?
4. What are the primary symbols in the story and how does the author use these symbols throughout the narrative to suggest a theme?
5. How does the author use narrative point of view most effectively in this story? How would the story be different if told by a different character (if in first person), or if told from a different point of view–if the story is in first person, how would the story be different if told in 3rd person limited, or 3rd person omniscient?
6. Describe the author’s writing technique and how the theme of the story is revealed. For instance, does the writer use flowery language? Are the sentences brief or are they long and flowing? Does the writer set off the dialogue, or is the dialogue mixed into the narrative?
NOTE: I would suggest that you read the examples of fiction analysis from the introductory chapter, “Fiction: Reading, Responding, Writing,” to get a sense of this kind of analysis. If you need additional examples, please let me know.
