Purpose: The primary purpose is to practice the reflection on perspective, but we also hope that this assignment will give you an opportunity to reconcile with your past self. You are doing this assignment to practice self-empathy, with a larger purpose of practicing empathy for others’ perspectives.
Instructions: All of us have experienced shifts in our own thinking over time. Our perspectives change. The Apostle Paul described it like this: “When I was a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.” (1 Cor. 13:11, New International Version). Take some time to think about a belief or attitude you used to have. How did changes in perspective change the way you view the issue? Once you have an idea, write a letter to your younger self. In the same way we try to offer understanding to others, offer understanding and empathy to your younger self. Be gentle and respectful. For some of us, this will involve actually offering ourselves forgiveness or mercy for having misunderstood. Please note that in order to receive full marks, you will need to demonstrate understanding of your younger self, not only forgiveness. How did the issues of perspective change things? Write between 600-800 words in your letter to yourself. Your professor will be the only person who reads this.
