For an ethnographer, one of the most important aids to fieldwork is the personal journal. In these journals, ethnographers jot down their daily observations about the society in which they are living or doing research, as well as their personal thoughts, questions about, and reactions to the situations they observe. These journal notations may be quite different from the formal interview questions, questionnaire responses, or video descriptions ethnographers would develop for their specific areas of research.
This assignment, which is worth 20 percent of your final grade, is due at the end of Unit 7. It requires you to select any three of the video programs listed under the “Viewing Assignment” sections in the Study Guide and to produce personal, two-page journal entries for each. Your journal entries should record your ethnographic observations on and thoughts about each video program. Although you may want to use the study questions that accompany the viewing assignment as a guide, your journal must include much more than your responses to these questions. For instance, it should contain your personal observations about and reflections on these societies. What implications do the issues raised in these programs have for your own society? Do you agree with Maybury-Lewis’ interpretations and contrasts? Try to select the three video programs that interest you the most. You may, of course, link your comments to any other points made or issues raised throughout the course.

Questions to keep in mind for: Touching Timeless and Inventing Reality
A Huichol shaman and a modern doctor work together to cure the sick. How does their relationship and understanding of one another challenge some of the stereotypes about remote or isolated societies?
How do different cultures deal with pain or grief?
If a patient has a different cultural background than his or her doctor, what kinds of communication problems may arise? How might these problems be overcome?
Can modern objects such as trucks be introduced into a traditional pilgrimage without changing the traditional values and beliefs? How can the traditional and the modern learn from each other and work together?
Consider what role, if any, religion and the spiritual play in your life. Do you believe in the power of astrology, herbal medicines, or acupuncture? Why or why not?
What are the goals of the Huichol pilgrimage?
What purpose do objects serve in ritual?
