Identify a population and two quantitative measurements that interest you. For
example: the population could be new cars, and the two variables could be
weight (x) and fuel mileage (y). Or, the population could be students, and
the two variables could be hours of work per week (x) and hours of study (y).
Think of two quantitative variables that interest you and that are probably related
in some way. The point of the project is to determine what kind of relationship, if
any, exists between the two variables.
Collecting your data should not put anyone at risk or make anyone feel
uncomfortable. Because of the ongoing virus threat, do not approach people in
person to collect your data. You can use social media or other electronic means to
reach people. If in doubt, consult with me to check whether your idea is
appropriate.
2. Collect a sample. If possible, the sample should have at least 20 pairs (x and y) of
numbers. Include the list of x and y values in your document.
3. Make a scatter-plot for the data you collected. Describe what you see. (Section
9.1)
4. Calculate the correlation coefficient r and interpret the result. (Section 9.1)
5. Calculate the coefficient of determination and interpret the result. (Section 9.3)
6. Perform a hypothesis test to test whether there is significant correlation. Use a
two-sided test and a level of significance of 10 %. Interpret the result. (Section
9.1)
7. Find the regression equation (line of best fit). (Section 9.2)
8. Pick an x-value of your choice within the range of x-values of the sample and use
the equation to estimate the corresponding y-value. Interpret the result. (Section
9.2)
9. Calculate the standard error and interpret the result. (Section 9.3)
10. Find the 90% prediction interval for the x-value from (8). Interpret the result.
(Section 9.3)
Write it up nicely and submit it online. You can make the scatter plot in Excel and
copy it into your Word document.
