For
the final publish of your essay, please read my suggestions on edits to
be made carefully and re-look at the original assignment details (I
will add them below my comments)
Here
are some comments and suggestions for the final publish:
1.
Take a look at the sample thesis statements in the Visual Analysis
module. Your thesis should be about the movie’s theme and the 2-3
film elements that will help you discuss the theme. You are really
close here; I just think a bit of tinkering will make a more
graceful and informative thesis statement. Remember that your thesis
statement can be more than one sentence long.
2.
Please take out the section headings and instead write good
transitions at the beginnings of your paragraphs.
3.
Do a little wordsmithing, especially with pronouns. Always avoid
“you” and “your” in academic writing. Keep it in
third person. Avoid telling the reader what you’re doing to do in
the essay. Instead of “I will discuss the lighting in the film”
(or whatever), write something like this: The lighting in the film
shows that….”
4.
You’ve done a nice job with the scenes you describe. Be sure to tie
in carefully the film element you are discussing (lighting, music,
setting, costumes, character development, whatever). Also, and this
is the most important thing, tie the scene back into the theme of
the film (the theme that you mentioned in your thesis statement).
You’ve got a bit too much plot summary here and not enough analysis.
5.
A works cited list at the end is a MUST. For help with citations,
especially the film you are analyzing, please take a look at the MLA
module near the top of our home page.
Details:
Watch
the movie “Freedom Writers”
Write
a 5-page essay (not including Works Cited list).
Identify
and explain the theme you are using.
Use
a discussion of at least two film elements to show how the film
conveys the theme through visual and auditory means (see below for a
suggested outline).
Use
TWO texts from our class to help explain an important point in your
essay.
Properly
cite your sources (including the movie) both in-text and in a works
cited page. (Don’t forget to use the MLA module on our Canvas page
for help.)
Use
standard, edited, American English and a fairly formal tone for this
essay.
Revise,
proofread, and edit carefully.
