Considering that the current world order revolves around the autonomy of the nation-state, with an ideological emphasis on national democracy—what implications might Rodrik’s ‘Political Trilemma’ have for the pursuit of global solutions to inherently global problems? Can humanity as a whole adequately address global issues such as climate change, which require global adherence to policy change, with a level of enforcement power that falls short of global governance? If not—i.e. if we are willing to override the politics of national democracy, what does this mean for our current mass acceptance of democratic values. Based on what we know about human-driven climate change and what is required to achieve a reversal of its impending catastrophic effects, any successful policy to address this would require countries to make sacrifices that are at direct odds with their national economic interests, necessitating action that may go against popular democratic demands. When states choose (democratically) not to cooperate with global initiatives to fight climate change, should we allow the national interests of these states to take precedence over the survival of humanity?
