ASSIGNMENT 1
BELOW IS THE INSTRUCTION FOR ASSIGNMENT DIRECTLY FROM MY BLACKBOARD. THERE IS TWO PARTS TO THIS ASSIGNMENT
Let’s assume that you were talking with your manager (or another appropriate management-level person in your organization) about your research topic, and he or she expressed interest in hearing more about how your topic might benefit your organization. In this activity, you will be using the content from your research essay from Module 6 to develop a plan for a short (1-2 page) proposal to your manager. ( Reseach essay will be uploaded below)
The goal of this activity is to help plan a workplace proposal that will be submitted at the end of the module. Ultimately, this proposal is not expected to be very detailed. Think of it almost as “floating an idea” to your manager to see what might happen. If you currently don’t work in an organization where your overall topic makes sense, that’s okay. Just simulate a workplace environment to the best of your ability by identifying the best person within a real (or fictional) company to read your proposal. You can get creative about this. For example, if you wrote a research paper on a topic related to the U.S. Civil War, you might write your proposal to a museum director explaining how they should present this topic to their visitors. If you’re having trouble with this part, reach out to your instructor for assistance.
Please use the following questions to frame your initial response: (YOU NEED TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT)
What was the overall topic of your research essay? Given that it was persuasive, what did you want your readers to believe, think, or do after reading your essay?
What workplace or organizational problem does your essay topic solve? What would be the significance of solving this problem?
What recommendation or solution are you making to the company or organization? Be as specific as possible and explain how it solves the problem you identified above.
What evidence do you have from your academic essay that will help you present your proposal to your intended reader?
Who is the intended reader of your proposal? What do you know about this person? How does what you know influence how and what you will write in your proposal?
BBELOW IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR WILL BE LOOKING FOR.
The overall topic of my research essay was creating a workplace recycling program. My goal in writing was to convince my readers that they should create a workplace recycling program in their own companies. I learned that there are several benefits to doing so, including:
saving money and reducing waste by providing reusable items when possible.
increasing morale by creating friendly competitions
helping others understand the effects of waste on the environment
While those are three different problems and their associated benefits, they are all closely related. My specific recommendation to my company is to create an ongoing recycling program in which the company recycles or reuses as much as possible, including toner cartridges, paper and plastic products, glass and cans, and so forth. I propose to do this by installing recycling stations in each break room, providing reusable cups for all employees, and using the money raised from specific product recycling (such as toner cartridges) to pay for team outings.
As I was writing my research essay, I found quite a few peer-reviewed articles that support the idea that recycling not only is good for the environment, but also improves morale in the workplace. I think the best overall article I found was this one:
Amrutha, V. N., & Geetha, S. N. (2020). A systematic review on green human resource management: Implications for social sustainability. Journal of Cleaner Production, 247, 119-131. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2019.119131 (Links to an external site.)
I have several other sources I’m considering using, but I haven’t yet decided which ones are best for the proposal. My biggest concern is coming across “too academic,” I think.
My intended reader is my direct supervisor, Mark Jones. He has been with our company for seven years, and he started in the same position I’m in now. I think he would need to see not only financial benefits, but also overall environmental benefits. Our company tends to be conscious of environmental and social justice issues. The company also is quite casual, so I think it would be okay to use less formal language in my proposal than I did in my research essay.
ASSIGNMENT 2
BELOW IS THE ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION
In M7.4: Planning Your Proposal, you developed a preliminary plan for a workplace proposal (WHICH IS THE ASSIGNMENT ABOVE) that was based on the topic from the research essay you submitted in Module 6 ( I WILL UPLOAD MY ESSAY BELOW). This week, you will use that plan to develop a short (1-2 page) workplace proposal.
As a reminder, your manager (or another appropriate management-level person in your organization) expressed interest in hearing more about how your research essay topic might benefit your organization. Your goal is to convince your manager (or other appropriate reader) to give you permission to proceed with what you’re proposing.
If you currently don’t work in an organization where your overall topic makes sense, that’s okay. Just simulate a workplace environment to the best of your ability by identifying the best person within a real (or fictional) company to read your proposal. If you’re having trouble with this part, reach out to your instructor for assistance.
THE PROPOSAL MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:
Introduction (subject, purpose, significance, and background)
Project details (recommendation or solution)
Deliverables or milestones (products and/or due dates)
Conclusion (summary and call to action)
Because the document is in a letter format, you are not required to use internal headings to distinguish the individual sections, but you may do so if that approach makes sense. You may also include visual elements if you think that they would help your reader take action on your proposal, but visuals are also not required.
Your proposal is not expected to be comprehensive or lengthy. Use the information you have already developed in your research essay and revise it to meet your audience’s specific needs. By this point, you should have already conducted enough research to develop your proposal without too much extra time searching for supporting sources. After all, you’ve already prepared a complete research paper on the topic! But, be willing to augment some areas from your research paper and condense others. Be sure that you are focusing on your reader and what you think his or her expectations will be for the proposal.
